Eyelash Extension Aftercare: 9 Tips to Make Your Lashes Last Longer

eyelash extension aftercare

You’ve just walked out of the salon with a gorgeous new set of lash extensions — fluttery, full and completely mascara-free. Now the goal is keeping them that way. With the right aftercare, a quality lash set can look beautiful for four to six weeks between refills. Here are the nine tips our lash technicians give every client at The Royal Beauty Bar.

1. Keep them dry for the first 24 hours

The adhesive needs a full day to cure completely. Avoid water on your lashes, steamy showers, saunas, swimming and heavy workouts for the first 24 hours. This single habit makes the biggest difference to how long your set lasts.

2. Cleanse them — gently and regularly

A common myth is that you shouldn’t wash lash extensions at all. The opposite is true: oil, makeup and daily debris weaken the adhesive bond and can irritate the lash line. Cleanse every second day with a lash-safe, oil-free foaming cleanser and a soft brush, then rinse with cool water.

3. Avoid oil-based products near your eyes

Oil is the natural enemy of lash adhesive. Check your cleansers, moisturisers, serums and makeup removers — anything oil-based should stay well away from your lash line. Choose oil-free formulas for everything that touches your eye area.

4. Skip the mascara

You genuinely don’t need it — that’s the whole point of extensions. Mascara (especially waterproof) clumps the fans, coats the bonds and is difficult to remove without rubbing. If you want extra drama, ask us for a fuller or longer set at your next refill instead.

5. Don’t rub, pick or pull

Rubbing your eyes is the fastest way to lose extensions — and it can take your natural lashes with them. If your eyes feel itchy, press a clean, cool compress gently against your closed lids instead. And never pick at a loose extension; let your technician remove it safely.

6. Sleep on your back (or invest in silk)

Pressing your face into a cotton pillow bends and snags extensions overnight. Try sleeping on your back, or switch to a silk or satin pillowcase that lets lashes glide instead of catch.

7. Brush them every morning

A quick sweep with a clean spoolie brush keeps your lashes fanned, separated and looking freshly done. Brush gently from the middle of the lash to the tip — never from the root.

8. Stay away from heat

High heat can warp synthetic lashes and weaken adhesive. Keep your face back when opening the oven, be careful with hairdryers, and skip the lash curler entirely — your extensions already have a beautiful curl built in.

9. Book refills every 2–3 weeks

Your natural lashes shed on their own cycle, taking extensions with them. A refill every two to three weeks replaces what’s shed and keeps your set looking consistently full — and it’s far more affordable than starting a new full set from scratch.

The bottom line

Lash extension aftercare comes down to three habits: keep them clean, keep them dry of oils, and keep your hands off them. Do that, and your set will reward you with weeks of effortless, wake-up-ready lashes.
